Frequently Asked Questions
Please use the links below to answer any questions or queries you may have regarding this site...
I live in a remote area; do you have smaller tankers as large vehicles often find it difficult to make a delivery?
Yes. If your property is on a narrow lane, or access is restricted, we can deliver in smaller tankers but you must specify your requirement for a smaller tanker when you place your order. Our fleet consists of four, six and eight wheeled tankers, as well as large articulated lorries.
My tank is a little way from the road. Can you still make the delivery?
Our tanker fleet includes tankers with 120ft hoses, so we are able to make most deliveries.
Is there a minimum amount I can have delivered?
Yes our minimum delivery is 500 litres. All Scottish Fuels deliveries are recorded by a ticketed meter, and these are calibrated to accurately record the amount of fuel pumped. Below 500 litres there is a small chance that the reading could be inaccurate. We do occasionally sell smaller quantities in barrels, so it's worth enquiring when you call to place your order.
Can you make a delivery when I’m not at home?
Yes. If you allow us access to the tank we can make our delivery when you’re out. We will supply you with a printed ticket indicating the precise amount you have received.
My neighbour has a Signalman monitoring device. How does it work?
Signalman is an automatic fuel tank gauge, which allows Scottish Fuels to monitor your oil level for you. The device can detect when the oil level is low and sends a signal to your local depot telling us that we need to top up your tank. This means you no longer have the inconvenience of checking your tank and ordering fuel yourself.
I’d like to know how I can make my heating system more efficient, do you have any tips?
OFTEC is the organisation responsible for looking after the oil heating and cooking industry throughout the UK and Ireland. The OFTEC website has a wide range of information, including some great tips for increasing the efficiency of your home heating system.
Once I have placed an order how long will it take for my heating oil to arrive?
Our usual delivery window is 3-5 days, but in particularly busy periods our delivery window may become wider. If you have a requirement for an urgent delivery please makes sure you notify us when you place your order. To make sure you never run out it's a good idea to keep checking your oil level or join our planned delivery scheme.
How often should I get my heating oil boiler serviced?
Our boiler maintenance partner, Team Energy, suggest you have your boiler serviced once a year. This will help your boiler operate more efficiently.
What is the difference between kerosene and gas oil?
Kerosene, also known as 28-second oil (or more commonly as home heating oil), is produced after the distillation process of crude oil. Most domestic systems run on kerosene because it provides a cleaner and more efficient burn for your home. Gas oil (red diesel), also known as 35-second oil, is more commonly used in agriculture and industry. Gas oil is less combustible than kerosene and has more carbon atoms.
I’ve heard that premium kerosene can improve the efficiency of my boiler?
Yes, it can. Premium kerosene can help to reduce energy consumption and extend the life of heating systems by leaving fewer deposits in the tank, filter and nozzle of the system; in addition, a special corrosion inhibitor protects the metal parts of the system, making it significantly more efficient.
How can I pay for oil?
You can pay for your oil by direct debit, cheque, credit/debit card or via internet or phone banking. Our Easy Payment Plan enables you to spread the cost of your fuel into more manageable, monthly amounts. For more information speak to your local Scottish team who will be happy to advise you on the best options for you.
What if I discover a leak or spill?
